VPN Keeps Disconnecting on Android? 12 Fixes That Actually Work

The VPN connects, the key icon appears at the top of the screen, and everything seems fine. Then, a few minutes later, the icon disappears. Sometimes it happens when the screen turns off. Sometimes it happens when the phone switches from Wi-Fi to mobile data. In other cases, the VPN stays “connected,” but websites stop loading.

This is a common Android problem, and it does not always mean the VPN server is down.

Android limits background activity to save battery. Phone manufacturers add their own battery managers on top of that. Unstable Wi-Fi, conflicting VPN apps, Private DNS settings, and network changes can also interrupt the connection.

Start with the quick checks below. Most Android VPN disconnection problems can be fixed without resetting the phone.

Quick checks before changing any settings

Try these three steps first:

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Connect to a different VPN server.

Android normally allows only one active VPN service at a time.
